The New York eHealth Collaborative and Health 2.0, a California-based promoter of healthcare applications development contests, are offering $25,000 in prizes in the Patient Portal for New Yorkers Design Challenge, a contest in which New Yorkers will get to vote on the best Web-based patient portal developed for the contest.

“This is a chance for developers and designers to advance healthcare for all 20 million New Yorkers,” said David Whitlinger, executive director of the collaborative, in a news release. “Through our design challenge, we hope to inspire applicants to develop truly creative and user-friendly applications. We look forward to seeing all submissions, and eventually building this portal so patients throughout the state have full access to their health records.”

The not-for-profit New York eHealth Collaborative oversees state-wide health information exchange efforts in the Empire State under a $22.4 million federal grant administered by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.

The deadline for developers to submit a portal design is April 11. Then, through April 21, their designs will be presented to the New York public for will be invited to vote. Developers whose portals receive the strongest public support will be invited to demonstrate their products in New York City and upstate at an as yet unnamed venue. A winner will be announced after the demonstrations. The collaborative will then “work with a vendor to build the portal and run it on behalf of the state of New York via its health information exchange network,” the statement said.

More information about the challenge is available on the Health 2.0 website.
