Americans live shorter lives and are sicker than their peers in other affluent countries, the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine concluded in a new report. The U.S. fared worse than average in nine health areas, including chronic lung disease, heart disease and infant mortality, and had the most deaths per 100,000 residents from all causes.
