Dr. William VanNess II, who just retired as president and CEO of 173-bed Community Hospital Anderson (Ind.), was named by Indiana Gov.-elect Mike Pence to be the next health commissioner for the state of Indiana.

VanNess had led Community Hospital Anderson since 1997 after joining the hospital staff in 1973 as a family physician. He also served as the physician member of the hospital board of directors from 1983 to 1989, and was also the president of the Indiana State Medical Association and the Madison County (Ind.) Medical Society.

Pence will be sworn in Jan. 14 as Indiana's 50th governor.
