The Cleveland Clinic and MedStar Health, the mid-Atlantic's largest health care system, have inked a deal that will allow the two institutions to collaborate on heart care.

“This alliance unites two of the nation's most well-respected heart programs,” said Kenneth Samet, president and CEO of MedStar Health. “By working together, we will be developing and sharing new and better treatments and therapies to benefit all patients who reach out to us for heart care.”

The new arrangement between the Clinic's Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute and the MedStart Heart Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., will allow physicians at each organization to share best practices. Moreover, MedStar physicians will work with the Clinic on quality outcomes and methods to speed improvements in heart care and research.

"We have long been impressed with the depth of clinical expertise and research capabilities at MedStar Heart Institute, and our teams are already working closely on advanced research studies," Clinic CEO Dr. Toby Cosgrove said in a statement. "This new alliance is an ideal opportunity to formalize our relationship to benefit patients and enhance our clinical collaboration."

In 2011, the Clinic tapped MedStar for its growing Innovation Alliance —a collaborative effort designed to lead to the commercialization of medical technologies. Other members of the Innovation Alliance include North Shore-LIJ Health System, which operates the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, N.Y., as well as ProMedica, a Toledo-based health system. The Clinic also has partnered with Ohio State University and University of Notre Dame.
