Johnson & Johnson said that
CEO Alex Gorsky has been named chairman of the board of directors and will assume that role in December when Bill Weldon steps down.
Gorsky, 52,
took over as CEO of the New Brunswick, N.J.-based healthcare company in April. At that time, Weldon, who served as Johnson & Johnson's CEO for 10 years, stepped down as CEO but remained chairman of the board.
Weldon is expected to retire in the first quarter of 2013, according to a news release. He is 64.
Prior to his appointment as CEO, Gorsky was responsible for medical devices and diagnostics, global supply chain, healthcare compliance and privacy, and government affairs and policy for the company.
Gorsky was No. 54 on Modern Healthcare's 2012 list of the
100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.
