This year's honorees have shown leadership and how to deliver results

Posted: June 9, 2012 - 12:01 am ET

Welcome to Modern Healthcare's 10th annual CEO IT Achievement Awards program, co-sponsored by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. In this special editorial section, you'll meet the three recipients for 2012: Dr. Steven Altschuler, CEO of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; Lynn Britton, president and CEO of Mercy in Chesterfield, Mo.; and Richard Miller, president and CEO of Virtua in Marlton, N.J.

The awards recognize healthcare CEOs who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to using information technology to advance their organizations' strategic goals.

The trio was chosen from 63 entries in this year's competition. A five-judge panel consisting of three chief information officers chosen by HIMSS and two CEOs chosen by Modern Healthcare selected Altschuler, Britton and Miller from the pool of nominees. The judges reviewed the nominees using three criteria:

  • Demonstrated leadership and commitment to using IT to advance his or her healthcare organization's strategic goals.
  • Helped achieve measurable results through leadership and commitment to IT in his or her organization.
  • Shared his or her healthcare organization's IT experiences to benefit peers and other members of the healthcare industry.
The judges rated the nominees on how well they met the three criteria, using a 10-point scale for each. A perfect score was 30. A copy of the criteria, a list of factors to consider under each criterion, and a copy of the 2012 nomination form can be found in the Recognition section of

Modern Healthcare and HIMSS announced the 10th annual CEO IT Achievement Awards competition on Jan. 16, and the submission deadline was March 9. It was extended to March 23 to accommodate late entries. The judges evaluated the nominations through April 1 with the three winners determined April 9. The winners were announced in the April 16 issue.

In addition to being profiled in this special section, Altschuler, Britton and Miller will be honored during National Health IT Week in Washington in September.
