St. Martin's University, Lacey, Wash., has named Louise Kaplan as head of its new registered-nurse-to-bachelor's-of-science-in-nursing program.

Kaplan, 59, served as a senior policy fellow at the American Nurses Association in Silver Spring, Md. She also served as a tenured professor at Washington State University Vancouver. She started as director of St. Martin's nursing program last month. The RN-BSN program will start in the fall 2012 semester at St. Martin's.

“We are delighted to welcome a nursing professional of such distinction and ability to St. Martin's back to Thurston County,” said Eric Apfelstadt, dean of St. Martin's College of Arts and Sciences, in a news release. “Under Dr. Kaplan's direction, we expect our nursing program to grow as a leader in nursing education.”

St. Martin's ended its nursing program in 1998, because of financial constraints. Officials started talks in 2010 of reviving it.
