Now seeking America's healthiest home videos

By Jessica Zigmond

This week, HHS' Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT announced its Healthy New Year Video Challenge for 2012. The program invites consumers to submit video entries showing how they used health IT to improve their health—and achieve a new year's resolution (such as losing weight, quitting smoking or managing stress). It's the first in a series of consumer videos for 2012, according to the ONC.

Last year, former CMS Administrator Dr. Donald Berwick used nearly every speaking engagement he had to emphasize how the CMS wants to learn about creative solutions in healthcare that exist now across the country—and it's a mantra that Dr. Richard Gilfillan, acting director of the CMS Innovation Center, has repeated. The ONC is no different.

“We are excited to harness the creativity of ordinary Americans to help promote the positive impact of the myriad health information technology tools and services on health and healthcare,” Dr. Farzad Mostashari, the national coordinator for health information technology, said in a news release about the contest.

Entries will be accepted through Feb. 16, and a panel of judges will vote to select the winners. The total award money is $5,000, with $2,000 going to the top prize winner, $1,000 for second place, $500 for third, and three “honorable mention” awards at $250 apiece. The winning videos will be shown on www.healthIT.gov.
