SCRANTON, Pa.—Community Health Systems has completed its acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Moses Taylor Health Care System, a two-hospital system in northeast Pennsylvania.

Under the deal, which was announced in July and closed Jan. 1, Community Health Systems will acquire 248-bed Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton and 25-bed Mid-Valley Hospital in Peckville, bringing the Franklin, Tenn.-based company's total number of affiliated hospitals in Pennsylvania to 16. “The acquisition of Moses Taylor Health Care System strengthens our network in northeast Pennsylvania and provides additional opportunities to develop a regional approach to the delivery of health services through collaboration, shared resources, and the development of best practices for operational and clinical excellence,” Wayne Smith, chairman, president and CEO of Community Health Systems, said in a news release. Moses Taylor previously disclosed that Community Health Systems had made a five-year, $60 million capital commitment to the health system. CHS also acquired three Pennsylvania hospitals—Regional Hospital of Scranton, Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock, and Special Care Hospital in Nanticoke—from Catholic Health Partners last year.

MILTON, Mass.—Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a 621-bed hospital in Boston, and Milton Hospital said they finalized an agreement that expands their clinical affiliation and renames Milton Hospital as Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton. As part of the agreement, Beth Israel Deaconess will increase its membership on the Milton Hospital board to three members and the chair of Milton Hospital's board of directors will become a member of the Beth Israel Deaconess board, according to a news release. The agreement went into effect Jan. 1. The 82-bed Milton Hospital retains its license, board of directors, medical staff and senior leadership although some senior executives will have new reporting relationships to Beth Israel Deaconess, the hospitals said. The organizations first developed a clinical affiliation in 2003. Last year, they announced the terms of a new tentative agreement that would allow Milton Hospital to retain its board of directors and day-to-day oversight of operations and strategic planning efforts, while Beth Israel Deaconess would provide investments that would support Milton Hospital's physician network and clinical capabilities.
