Modern Healthcare congratulates the winners and honorable mentions of the 19th annual Spirit of Excellence Awards, co-sponsored by Sodexo Health Care Services.

This year's five winners and five honorable mention honorees are profiled on the following pages.

Each of the five winners will receive a cash prize of $5,000, and each of the five honorable mentions will receive a $1,500 cash prize.

This year's competition drew 142 entries, far surpassing last year's total of 98 submissions. Modern Healthcare announced this year's award competition on Aug. 8. The deadline for submissions was Sept. 30 and was extended to Oct. 14.

This year's program also featured two new categories—Patient Safety and Process Improvement—in addition to the previous categories of Community, Service and Team.

Per editorial policy, award sponsors are involved in neither the judging nor determination of award recipients.

To assist Modern Healthcare in making the selections, the magazine enlisted the help of five judges, all of whom are affiliated with past Spirit of Excellence Award recipients. They are:

  • Debra Gage, director of clinical operations at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif.
  • Christina Ryan, CEO of the Women's Hospital in Newburgh, Ind.
  • Stephen Salvo, vice president of human resources at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass.
  • Patricia Sanders-Hall, vice president of ancillary care at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City.
  • Scott Taylor, president and CEO of St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kan.

Modern Healthcare would like to thank the judges for their insight and expertise. We also would like to thank the following people for helping make this year's competition another success: Rebecca Mielcarski, research editor at Modern Healthcare, who coordinated the award competition; and Ed Finkel, a freelance writer and frequent Modern Healthcare contributor based in Evanston, Ill., who wrote the profiles. Finkel can be reached at edfinkel@earthlink.net.

To contact Sodexo, call Lynne Adame, senior director of communications, at 860-325-1290; or send her an e-mail at lynne.adame@sodexo.com.

Look for an announcement of the 2012 Spirit of Excellence Awards competition next year in Modern Healthcare.

The winners and honorable mentions will be profiled in a special section of the Dec. 17, 2012 issue.

Thank you.
