Sept. 17, 2001
The date Sept. 11 doesn't need any context.
The first issue of Modern Healthcare after the terrorist attacks was almost completely dedicated to covering the events of that day and healthcare's response to them. With all stories carrying the logo “Responding to America's trauma,” the main story told how first responders and healthcare providers mobilized. “The mettle of the nation's healthcare industry was put to the ultimate test last week after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, and the industry proved it was up to the challenge …” However, the patient load never approached what they expected. As the story went on to explain: “But the wounded never came in the numbers first feared, then prayed for by hospital workers.”
