As the article states, “The increasing number of patients affected with acquired immune deficiency syndrome threatens to strain the financial and physical resources of the nation's healthcare system.” At the time, AIDS was identified in the U.S. just five years earlier, and the number of reported cases stood at just over 27,000. Another prescient observation: “The disease will test the perseverance and courage of many healthcare workers, AIDS experts said.”
