The 44th president of the United States made history by not only being the first black person to be elected to the country's highest post, but also for ushering in a historic overhaul of the healthcare system in March 2010. The legislation, a top campaign promise, proposed an expansion of healthcare to cover 30 million uninsured, as well as caps on insurance premium increases and more affordable coverage. The Patient Care and Affordable Care Act, slated to go into effect in stages over the next few years, has drawn major criticism from many members of the Republican Party, many of whom ran in 2010 on the promise of repealing the reform law.
