Kennedy, who died at age 77 in August 2009, once called healthcare “the cause of my life.” Key achievements include the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1996 and the Affordable Health Choices Act in 2009. Before his death, Kennedy was a supporter of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and he cast a deciding vote to prevent significant costs to healthcare reimbursement on a Medicare bill.
