Before his death, Kennedy was a supporter of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and he cast a deciding vote to prevent significant costs to healthcare reimbursement on a Medicare bill. Upon hearing of his death, President Barack Obama said, “For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.”
