During 47 years in the Senate, Kennedy cast 15,235 votes and sponsored or influenced a number of healthcare bills. Kennedy, who died at age 77 in August 2009, once called healthcare “the cause of my life.” Key achievements include the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1996 and the Affordable Health Choices Act in 2009. Before his death, Kennedy was a supporter of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and he cast a deciding vote to prevent significant costs to healthcare reimbursement on a Medicare bill. Upon hearing of his death, President Barack Obama said, “For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.”
