Prior to his election to governor of Florida in 2010, Scott was best known as the former chief executive of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., which was fined $1.7 billion by the federal government for Medicare billing fraud. Scott co-founded the Columbia Hospital Corp. in 1987, which merged in 1989 with Hospital Corporation of America to become the largest for-profit healthcare company in the country. After revelations of fraud at the company in 1999, Scott resigned, denying any wrongdoing. In his run for governor in 2010, the Republican spent $75 million of his own money on his campaign and went on to defeat his more-established opponent in the primaries.
