The Republican politician was chosen speaker of the house during the Clinton administration, following the 1994 midterm elections, during which he was noted for helping draft the “Contract with America.” After assuming office, however, his popularity began to decline after facing a series of controversies, including several ethics investigations. Gingrich stepped down as speaker of the House in November 1998 and resigned his seat in Congress the following January. Following his departure from office, Gingrich made healthcare a top priority. In 2003, he founded the Center for Health Transformation, whose mission is to help create “better health and more choices at lower cost.” Gingrich has been rumored to be looking toward the GOP presidential nomination in 2012.
