First elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980, watchdog Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, is best known for his 1986 modernization of the False Claims Act, which authorizes “whistleblower” fraud lawsuits on behalf of the government. In 2009, the Iowa senator worked with Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) on what was supposed to be a bipartisan bill for an overhaul of the healthcare system. Grassley also was one of the main players in the Medicare and prescription drug act in 2003.
