Henry J. Kaiser, along with partner Dr. Sidney Garfield, led to the creation of what evolved into what is today known as Kaiser Permanente, the beginning of group practice and the current health insurance industry. A prepaid health plan was made available to workers employed with Kaiser Industries, and after World War II was offered to the public. Kaiser Permanente now serves more than 8.7 million members and is one of the nation's largest not-for-profit health plans. Kaiser Permanente is made up of the Permanente Medical Groups, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals.
