Created in 2004 and mandated by the HITECH Act in 2009, the position of national coordinator was given in early April to Dr. Farzad Mostashari, who replaced Dr. David Blumenthal. The ONC supports the implementation and promotion of health information technology and is charged with the coordination of nationwide efforts to use the most advanced technology possible, as well as the electronic exchange of health information. The ONC's role has become particularly apparent during the rollout of meaningful-use criteria for electronic health records, required to qualify for some $27 billion in federal subsidies to promote use of EHRs. Blumenthal recently updated the five-year Federal Health IT Strategic Plan, which shows how various federal public- and private-sector plans to promote the use of health IT work together.
