The largest healthcare union with more than 1.2 million members--including doctors, lab technicians, nurses and home-care workers, the SEIU was started in 1921 by members of seven small janitor unions that hoped to build strength by joining forces. After the Great Depression, the union was the first in the U.S. to help other service workers, such as public employees and hospital caregivers, unite, paving the way for SEIU's three main industries—public services, healthcare and property. SEIU's membership is made up of more immigrants than any other union, which has driven the union's commitment to diversity.
