Nearly $8 million marked to boost community health centers

HHS and the agency's Health Resources and Services Administration said they will award nearly $8 million in federal funding from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act for existing community health center cooperative agreements that provide training and technical assistance to local organizations that support community health centers.

According to HHS, organizations use the funding for community development, expansion planning, patient-centered medical home development and adoption of meaningful-use health information technology.

In the next five years, the Affordable Care Act will provide $11 billion in funding for the operation, expansion and construction of community health centers nationwide, including $9.5 billion that is intended for creating new community health centers in medically underserved areas. The other $1.5 billion is to support major construction and renovation projects community health centers.
