Mark Leavitt, the physician who has been serving as chairman of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology since 2004, will retire effective March 31, 2010. The health information technology certification body said in a news release it is conducting a national search to replace Leavitt.

Leavitt said during a news conference that he is leaving to fulfill a promise to his family made when he first took the position.

In April, Leavitt, 59, discussed the future of CCHIT in a video with Modern Healthcare. The commission has been restructuring its certification and testing programs for vendor products as it aligns itself to meet changes in the healthcare IT market since passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
