Project Overview:
Project Title: Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Shapiro Cardiovascular Center
Project Location: Boston, Massachusetts
Construction Type: New Construction
Size: 1,278,686 square feet
Cost: $210,000,000

About the Project:
Within its circulation system, a series of strategically positioned public spaces with engaging views, facilitate wayfinding throughout the Center, while offering opportunities for repose and relaxation. In addition, to avoid the typically dispiriting institutional feeling, double-height spaces with interconnecting stairways create waiting rooms with a gracious living room setting. Patient rooms around the building’s perimeter feature large windows that provide abundant soothing natural light. All patient rooms are private and include a family zone; moreover by introducing transparency in selected interior partitions, natural light is filtered from patient rooms into hallways and nurses stations, greatly enhancing the interior environment.

Fully equipped with the latest technology, including eight miles of fiber-optic cable and an electronic tracking system to monitor the flow of patients and equipment, the Center includes a hybrid operating room capable of accommodating both angioplasties and bypass surgeries and spaces for future technological advancements such as robotic surgery and real-time body scans. As a center dedicated to cardiovascular care, the Shapiro Center greatly improves efficiency in several ways. Housing all heart patients under one roof ensures more accurate scheduling of procedures and discharges, reducing average length of stay. Locating physicians specializing in allied but different fields, such as angioplasties and bypasses, in close proximity improves collaboration and communication between sub-specialists as well as providing patients with one-stop medical care.
