The National Association of State Chief Information Officers, or NASCIO produced a guide to help state CIOs play a role in helping states navigate opportunities and responsibilities under the health information technology provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The section of the stimulus bill often referred to as the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, or HITECH, designates $2 billion for planning and implementation of grants to states.
According to a news release, NASCIO's
“HITECH in the States: Action List for State CIOs” explains that states “must work quickly, but carefully,” and that state CIOs can play an important role, for example, by convening IT stakeholders, assessing existing infrastructure and determining readiness for large-scale health-information exchange.
