The American Medical Association has thrown its support behind the Affordable Health Choices Act introduced in the House, citing its “broad range of provisions that are key to effective, comprehensive health system reform.” At least one state medical society, however, disagrees.
In a letter to the chairmen of the Energy and Commerce Committee, House Ways and Means Committee and House Education and Labor Committee,
AMA Executive Vice President and CEO Michael Maves said the AMA was pleased with the bill's provisions to extend coverage to all Americans through health insurance market reforms, provide consumers with a choice of plans through a health insurance exchange, repeal the sustainable growth-rate formula for Medicare, and address workforce shortage concerns.
The Medical Association of Georgia, however, has posted
an item on its Web site declaring that “H.R. 3200 is not the solution,” and is urging its members to contact their Congressmen and senators to tell them that they believe the measure will ultimately lead to a government-run, single-payer healthcare system.
