Just before the weekend that people move their clocks forward for daylight saving time, the Obama administration announced that it will go forward with a Bush administration plan to push back implementation of the ICD-10 codes.

In the final days of the Bush administration, HHS released two rules concerning ICD-10 implementation, but these were immediately put on hold in the first days of the Obama administration so they could be given further study.

HHS announced yesterday that it will go ahead with the previous administration’s plan to push back compliance with a rule calling for updating Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act standards governing electronic transactions to Jan. 1, 2012, and for the replacement of ICD-9 codes with the ICD-10 codes to Oct. 1, 2013. The original plans called for Oct. 1, 2010, and Oct. 1, 2011, compliance dates, respectively.

When asked for comment on yesterday’s announcement, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society referred Health IT Strategist to its Jan. 16 written statement praising the decision to push back compliance.
