Fifty hospitals rated as the best in 2009 by healthcare ratings organization HealthGrades had mortality and complications rates that were 27% and 8% lower, respectively, than all other U.S. hospitals.

To identify the top 50, HealthGrades, based in Golden, Colo., analyzed more than 110 million CMS hospitalization records from the nation’s 5,000 nonfederal hospitals. Patients admitted to these 50 hospitals are less likely to die or suffer major complication than those admitted to other hospitals, according to the findings.

These hospitals “are not only leading the pack, they’re also improving at a faster rate” than other hospitals in terms of clinical outcomes, said Samantha Collier, HealthGrades’ chief medical officer, and a chief author of the 2009 study, at a briefing to release the findings.

The winning hospitals had to demonstrate clinical outcomes—in terms of mortality and complication rates—that were among the top 5% in the nation across 26 different procedures and conditions and over a minimum of the past six consecutive years.
