Modern Healthcare reporter Jessica Zigmond, based in Chicago, covers public health, rural health, post-acute care and physician-owned hospitals for the magazine. Doc-ownership is especially likely to be a lightning-rod issue in the months ahead.

In 2008, congressional leaders showed their contempt for physician-owned hospitals by targeting these facilities in a range of bills that had nothing to do physician ownership, including children’s health insurance, mental-health parity and war appropriations.

The fears of physician owners in 2008 are expected to become a reality this year as Congress will more than likely re-introduce legislation to restrict physician ownership and discourage future growth in this segment.
