Modern Healthcare has won 13 awards from the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors, more than any other organization this year in its annual competition recognizing editorial excellence. The magazine garnered four gold, five silver and four bronze awards in the group’s contest, which covered work done in 2006. The ASHPE is a membership society for editors in the healthcare publishing sector.

One of Modern Healthcare’s gold awards was for its weekly news section, specifically in the March 20 issue. News Editor Paul Barr and the magazine’s staff were cited on the award. Reporter Jessica Zigmond earned another of the gold awards—for best feature—for her examination of the New Orleans healthcare infrastructure a year after Hurricane Katrina. Her story, “Still in recovery,” appeared in the Aug. 21 issue. Zigmond also received a bronze award for her breaking news coverage of the arrest of a physician and two nurses for allegedly euthanizing patients during the hurricane.

Modern Healthcare also won gold awards for its electronic newsletter, the Daily Dose, and for its Web site, Modern Healthcare Online, modernhealthcare.com.

The five silver awards cited:
  • Best single issue (July 24).
  • Best special supplement (The 30th anniversary supplement, Aug. 7).
  • Best signed editorial (“A JCAHO for patients,” June 12).
  • Best original research (the annual information technology survey, Feb. 13).
  • Best cover using photos (“Murder or mercy?” July 24).
The four bronze awards were for:
  • Best legislative/government article: (“California runs for coverage,” Sept. 4).
  • Best profile (“He blew the whistle,” Feb. 27).
  • Best single news article (“Life-altering decisions,” July 24).
  • Best Web-exclusive article (“Back from battle,” Jan. 2).

We believe these awards are another indication of the high quality of journalism found in our magazine and electronic publications. Our staff works very hard to offer our readers the best coverage of healthcare business and policy we can, and we’re gratified to be recognized this way by fellow professionals.
