Patrick Quinlan earned his stripes during his first year as chief executive officer of seven-hospital Ochsner Health System by playing a pivotal role in merging for-profit 600-physician Ochsner Clinic, a not-for-profit hospital foundation and a 190,000-member health plan into a unified healthcare delivery system in 2001. But it was Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and its aftermath that tested Quinlan and the 8,200-employee organization in New Orleans.

To compile the third annual ranking of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare, Modern Healthcare and sister publication Modern Physician announced the recognition program on Dec. 4, 2006. From Dec. 4 to Jan. 19, 2007, readers submitted nominations via Modern Physician Online at modernphysician.com. Some 1,700 nominations were submitted compared with just over 1,000 in 2006. The 100 physician-executives with the most nominations were placed on a final ballot.
